What social media and journalism are now and how we can make it better.

Over the last few years, more people are beginning to take part in staying informed on what is happening in the world. But how are people doing this? Largely through the internet, if you couldn’t already guess it. This has made two things happen: consumers are more knowledgeable, and journalists become better producers of news.

This is just one (localized) example of how important hard, well-developed, truthful journalism is. The AJC is proving to their readers that they have rose to the occasion and are dedicated to become better producers of news.

The Cronkite School at Arizona State University has numerous professors that are trying to strengthen reporting skills to combat misinformation in the news. This is a positive thing because decreasing the amount of misinformation in the news allows for readers to be more knowledgable on what is happening around them. It establishes trust between the consumer and the producer.

I have added this tweet as well because while talking about all of these advancements in the journalism and media world, it is OK to not be OK. Here is the link to the story by @projhumanities.

This YouTube videos is a few years old, but is still just as important. It even talks about the grumpy cat memes.

I personally love this video because it is short and sweet and straight to the point. I highly recommend giving this a watch.

The key to it all: OBJECTIVITY. Objectivity allows for your audience to trust you. This can allow for greater understanding and thus, creates a positive space.

As journalists, we should be using social media to our advantage and inform as many people as we can about what is going on in the world and community around us. When using truthful story-telling, you are creating a positive platform for others to obtain that information. Let’s make social media a positive and influential thing to further our learning capabilities.
